Upholstery & Soft Furnishings NOS Review - technical experts sought from companies to help with the development of these standards – this is a written request from Proskills.

Proskills has secured funding to review National Occupational Standards and Qualifications for Upholstery & Soft Furnishings.  This will cover both traditional and modern upholstery as well as the wide range of skills required for soft furnishings.

A need has also been identified to develop higher level standards and apprenticeships with an intent to give learners the additional skills to start up, manage and maintain their own upholstery/soft furnishings business once they have completed their training. New qualifications will need to be developed which give these learners the full scope of skills and knowledge needed to accomplish this.

The qualifications will be an NVQ (and SVQ) that can be delivered by training providers across the UK and we will also be building a technical certificate/diploma that will allow us to access a new apprenticeship. In doing this you will be able to access government funding available for apprenticeship programmes and other pots of money where you are eligible and are available.

The qualifications will be structured to be flexible. We are developing a number of units so that each company can choose a selection of units that provides their staff with the skills to meet their business needs, whether you are micro or a large business.  This is an opportunity that you cannot afford to miss: building a new qualification, fit for the modern yet diverse industry, with content and skills included that employers have said they need. This development presents the ability to significantly raise the skills of your workforce and in turn help grow your business and provides an alternative route for training that currently exists. We are working with some employers to help shape the content of the qualification and welcome others that wish to be become involved in the process, but this is by no means compulsory.

National Occupational Standards (NOS) are benchmarks of good practice. They specify the standard of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out a function in the workplace, together with the relevant underpinning knowledge and understanding.  For more information on NOS please click here for an interactive guide: http://www.nos-database.org.uk/sitepages/introduction_to_national_occupational_standards.aspx

It is essential that Proskills secures the relevant technical experts to help with the development of these standards.  There will be 2-3 working group meetings, the first will be a face to face meeting to be held in the Midlands area in May 2014.   If you are able to join us for the first working group meeting could you please complete the Doodle poll so Proskills can find the most suitable date: http://doodle.com/e3wafk63ics9sywa
