George Smith Ltd
George Smith has become synonymous with beautifully crafted furniture. Every sofa, chair, chaise and stool is lovingly made in our workshops in the North of England.
George Smith, the early nineteenth century furniture maker, is still a strong influence in the way we make and design our furniture. Equally, we are driven to make contemporary pieces relevant for our lives today.
Good design and craftsmanship are key to great furniture and we continue to use the best possible materials to achieve our aims.
Our skills as craftsmen and designers also ensure that your furniture is completely aligned to the way you live and the homes you create. Sizes and details can be adjusted to produce a George Smith piece of furniture just for you.
The process of hand-building our furniture uses traditional methods passed down through the generations alongside the best of modern techniques. We begin simply with prime, seasoned Beech or Birch to build the custom-made frames, each is hand-jointed to exacting standards. Next heavy steel coiled springs are tied into wide bands of interwoven jute webbing, this provides balanced weight distribution for maximum comfort.
We use Boar bristle as the primary stuffing material, enveloping and cushioning the coil springs, followed by a cotton-feather mixture to provide thick padding and comfort. We hand sew a muslin pad in place to provide a smooth and seamless base for upholstery and then seat cushions are hand stuffed with a mixture of duck down and duck feathers.
The last detail is a final cover in fabric, leather or Kilim, cut to the correct pattern and hand stitched into position.
As we build each piece from the frame up we can offer a great amount of customisation and special detailing. Our commitment to quality and traditional techniques creates a look and feel individual to George Smith.
