Consumer attitudes to fire safety information on furniture - Testing alternative labelling approaches for soft furnishings with consumers
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) commissioned research to explore consumers’ awareness and attitudes to fire safety in relation to soft furnishings.
A major aspect of the research – conducted via focus groups - was to help to develop new and clearer fire safety labels that allowed the consumer to make better informed purchasing decisions, such as which soft furnishings contained flame retardant chemicals and those which were made of ‘naturally flame-retardant materials’. While the labels needed to work for waste disposal companies as well, this research focused only on the consumer perspective.
