British furniture manufacturer, ercol, has made a huge first impression at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The industry’s top editors scoured the floor of the Javits Exhibition Center to choose the best of the design crop over sixteen categories and have voted ercol the winner in the furniture category – a significant coup for the company who is visiting this event for the first time.
ercol – an introduction
It might be ercol’s first visit to ICFF in New York, but they are no stranger to the world of design. This British company, has been designing and manufacturing quality furniture in the UK since 1920 when Lucian Ercolani first started the company. Today, the business is still family run, with Edward Tadros at the helm, and ercol is the UK’s largest manufacturer of solid wood furniture. The company has a strong focus on growing its export business and is currently enjoying forays into foreign markets including Europe, Australia, Asia and of course the United States.
The talented design team and skilled craftsmen are based at the company’s award-winning factory in Buckinghamshire, UK, where collections are hand-crafted with elm, ash, beech, oak and walnut using traditional furniture making techniques.
ercol is synonymous with timeless design and quality, combined with excellent functionality. Designs are predominantly created by its accomplished in-house design team, however, ercol continues to collaborate with upcoming and established design talent to ensure the brand remains at the vanguard of great British furniture design. Recent collaborations included working with high profile designers such as Matthew Hilton, Terence Conran and Russell Pinch. Ercol also works with fabric designers and recent partnerships include Timorous Beastie, Isle of Bute and Designers Guild.
Revealed at ICFF
ercol is much celebrated for its iconic mid-century furniture and the ‘Originals’ range still boasts signature pieces that were first launched in this era. ercol has used ICFF as a platform to reveal modern day interpretations of classic ercol pieces, the iconic Butterfly Chair, Originals Nest of Tables, Love Seat and the Studio Couch. ercol also continues to introduce new collections to its core range that suit the demands of modern homes. The combination of the Originals Collections and these contemporary ranges ensures a robust portfolio offering an extensive range of home furniture with quality designs for every room in the house – living room, dining, occasional, bedroom and home office furniture - combining visual appeal with functionality whilst ensuring consistent and uncompromised quality.
Also on show at ICFF is ercol’s latest collection, ‘Svelto’. This contemporary range of occasional furniture cleverly combines simplicity, utility and beauty. The hero piece is the stunning natural oak cabinet with its two sliding black walnut doors to provide closed and open spaces. The graphite grey cast iron legs provide a striking urban contrast.
To complement this collection is the Svelto sofa, designed by UK specialist sofa designer, Ian Archer. Ian’s design skilfully incorporates ercol’s signature use of exposed wood along with crisp, clean lines. For total vibrancy, it is upholstered in Bute Fabric’s ‘passion red’.
Edward Tadros, Chairman, comments: “This is our first time at this event and we are absolutely overwhelmed with the response we have had to our collections in New York. For our designs to be recognised with this award is quite simply thrilling. ICFF has allowed us to introduce ercol to some influential people in the American interiors field and we are confident that ercol will prosper in this exciting market.”
